Elizabeth commissioned this set of rings to commemorate the four female generations of her family: her grandmother, mother and new baby daughter. These strong women have a huge influence in her life. She wanted to symbolise the four individual personalities, and the layering of their roles: as the eldest becomes more frail and needy, the younger generations step up to reciprocate the care that they once received. The ring features coral, which traditionally offers protection to children, and a row of black diamonds, which can be slotted into the middle of the ring, to be hidden from everyone except the wearer. |
